Kevan completed a very professional repair to my daughter's iBook. It is interesting that computers always seem to crash when course work needs to be submitted at the end of term! In this case it was a real emergency - the course work was there - the iBook hard disk had died. I had managed to extract a few of the important course files but it was a painfully slow process. Kevan diagnosed the fault by email and confirmed the diagnosis when I delivered the iBook to Tranent, He provided an accurate estimate for the repair (a new much larger hard disk) and also quoted for fitting additional RAM. Although there was a slight delay in the repair being completed this was due to problems with the supply of the new hard disk and Kevan kept me informed of progress. When I went to collect the iBook Kevan had managed to restore all the original files, photographs and iTunes music to the new disk. My daughter now has a much faster and much cleaner iBook. Hopefully she will learn the lesson of making backups of important files.
I would thoroughly recommend FixMyMac to anybody that needs help with Apple computers. I have been dithering about swapping from my solid but unspectacular Windows XP machine to an iMac to help me cope with increased digital photography and slide scanning. Now, with the knowledge that Kevan is only 30 minutes drive from where I live, I'm just waiting for the new breed of iMacs to appear with Leopard in October and I will make the leap from Windows to Mac.

I bought a second hand G5 off ebay that had crashed within a week of my receiving it. Fix My Mac promptly got back to my internet query and ran through a series of possible faults over the phone while I faithfully stabbed at various vital Mac organs with my screwdriver. Unfortunately, my naive attempts at mouth to Mac didn't’t work and so they came out to my place and performed open Mac surgery while I winced in the background. The fault turned out to be with my graphics card, which would have cost me dearly and any unscrupulous trader would have replaced for me. Having something wrong with your computer is akin to a fault with your car. Without expertise it is very difficult to tell if the mechanic is being honest or whether you really do require a new fuel pump and timing belt fitted. Without FixMyMac I would not have been able to purchase the component I required to 'fix my mac' myself. As an Apple Mac user for 15 years, I resent the fact that Apple will not sell me a component directly - even though my product was no longer covered by warranty - why should some parts be exclusive to the Authorised Apple Reseller channel? In this instance, I required a new Power Supply Unit [PSU], admittedly an awkward (but not impossible) component to reach in a dual G5 PPC but, surely, a replaceable part none-the-less. In the current climate of automated response telecommunications (i.e. Press 1 if you meet this criteria etc.) it was a refreshing surprise to talk to a human who, with a few well structured and accurately targeted questions, put your mind at ease immediately. Kevan Gordon, made sure of compatibility by checking against his database of components, confirmed the procedure of RMA product exchange, clarified the the risk of non-returnable goods, ordered the part in good faith prior to any financial exchange, synchronising with (real-time) electronic communication for invoices and part delivery status etc. Within 48 hours of contacting FixMyMac I had the part I couldn't order directly from Apple and, after an hour of re-building the G5 again, I had a working computer. All-in-all a professional service and one which I will have no hesitation in recommending to any other Mac users in Scotland!
